Why Roblox charges Canadian tax at all
Until mid-2021, foreign digital companies selling to Canadians often collected no GST or HST. That changed when Canada brought in simplified registration rules for non-resident digital suppliers. Platforms above the revenue threshold now have to register with the Canada Revenue Agency and charge tax on sales to Canadian consumers, in the same way a domestic retailer would. Roblox is registered, which is why Robux carries tax at checkout.
Quebec runs its own parallel system for QST, and British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba each apply their provincial tax to digital and software sales separately from the federal GST. That is why those three provinces show a combined rate rather than a single harmonised one.
The rate follows your account, not your location
Roblox determines which rate to apply from the address on your account and payment method. A student from Calgary studying in Toronto keeps paying Alberta's 5% until the account details change. Moving province and updating your details changes the rate on your next purchase.
What this means in practice
For a household in New Brunswick spending $260 a year on Robux, sales tax adds about $39. The identical spend in Alberta adds $13. That gap is not something you can plan around, but it is useful context when comparing what a bundle "costs" against figures quoted on American sites, which almost always exclude tax entirely.
The larger and more controllable saving is where you buy. Purchasing inside the iOS or Android app adds roughly 25% before tax is even applied, which dwarfs the provincial difference. Buying on the Roblox website or redeeming a gift card is worth far more than living in a low-tax province.
Gift cards
Retailers generally do not charge GST or HST when you buy a Roblox gift card, because gift cards are treated as gift certificates rather than as goods. Tax normally applies when the credit is redeemed for Robux instead, so the total you pay works out broadly similar either way. The real advantage of gift cards is avoiding the mobile app markup, not avoiding tax.
Frequently asked questions
Does Roblox charge tax on Robux in Canada?
Yes. Roblox is registered to collect Canadian sales tax on digital sales and applies GST, HST, PST, RST or QST at checkout depending on the province on your account. Prices shown on the Robux purchase page do not include tax, so the amount charged to your card is always higher than the listed bundle price.
How much tax do you pay on Robux in Ontario?
Ontario applies 13% HST. A $12.99 Robux bundle costs $14.68 at checkout, and the $129.99 bundle costs $146.89. Tax is calculated on the listed price.
Which province pays the least tax on Robux?
Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon pay only the 5% federal GST. New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island pay the most at 15% HST. On a $129.99 bundle that is a difference of $13.00.
Are Roblox gift cards taxed in Canada?
Retailers generally do not charge GST or HST when you buy a gift card, because gift cards are treated as gift certificates rather than goods. Tax normally applies when the credit is redeemed for Robux instead, so the total ends up broadly similar either way.
Why did my Robux cost more than the listed price?
Two things stack. Roblox lists bundle prices before sales tax, so your province adds 5 to 15% at checkout. And if you bought inside the iOS or Android app, you also paid a platform markup of roughly 25% on top of the web price before tax was calculated.
Does Roblox use my billing address or my account address?
Roblox determines the applicable rate from the address associated with your account and payment method. Moving between provinces changes the rate you are charged once those details are updated.
